"Mina Mina Jukurrpa" by Judy Watson centers on the land of Mina Mina, located west of Yuendumu, which holds deep significance for Napangardi/Napanangka women and Japangardi/Japanangka men, who are the custodians of the Jukurrpa that shaped this region. The narrative follows a group of women of various ages on their journey eastward, where they gather food, collect ngalyipi (snake vine – Tinospora smilacina), and perform rituals along the way. Their journey commences at Mina Mina, where karlangu (digging sticks) rise from the earth. With these tools, the women traverse eastward, creating Janyinki and other important sites as they go, traveling well beyond the borders of Warlpiri country. The ngalyipi vine grows on the trunks and branches of kurrkara (desert oak – Allocasuarina decaisneana) trees and is sacred to Napangardi and Napanangka women, serving multiple purposes. It can be fashioned into ceremonial wraps, used as straps for carrying parrajas (wooden bowls) filled with bush tucker, or employed as a tourniquet for headaches. The wavy lines in the artwork symbolize the snake vine, the ‘u’ shapes represent the women, the circular forms depict the edible mushrooms they gather, and the two straight lines signify the digging sticks.
