Description

Thomas Tjapaltjarri was a distinguished Indigenous Australian artist and the younger brother of internationally renowned painters Walala and Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri. His work was characterised by the classical Tingari style—an ancient visual language traditionally used in body art, ground designs, and the embellishment of ceremonial objects.

In 1984, Thomas, along with his brothers and several other members of the Pintupi people, emerged from the remote Gibson Desert in Western Australia, making their first contact with the outside world. This extraordinary event, which captured global media attention, led to the group being dubbed "The Lost Tribe." Until that time, Thomas and his family had lived as traditional nomads, sustaining themselves through deep knowledge of their ancestral lands—its plants, animals, and sacred water sources—just as their ancestors had done for generations.

By 1987, Thomas began his painting career with the Papunya Tula Artists collective, joining his elder brothers in contributing to the contemporary Western Desert art movement. His works, deeply rooted in cultural and spiritual knowledge, reflect a profound connection to Country and ancestral storylines.

Thomas Tjapaltjarri sadly passed away in September 2024, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate within the world of Indigenous art.
