Description

In this Dreaming story, two ancestral dogs—a male Jampijinpa and a female Napangardi—journeyed from west to east, beginning at Yarrajalpa. As they travelled through places like Karljawarnu, Waanjurna, and Tapu, they created rockholes (‘warnirri’) and waterholes (‘ngapa’).

At Tapu, they separated—Napangardi went south, Jampijinpa north. Missing her, Jampijinpa howled, and she returned. They reunited and married at Ngarnka, wearing ceremonial headdresses, with Jampijinpa painted in white clay.

Together, they travelled east through Warlarla and Yurlpuwarnu, where they lit a fire, and on to Kulpurlunu and Ngumurlungu, where they were turned away during a sacred ceremony. Eventually, they reached Warlaku (Ali Curung), home to many dog families. There, they built a burrow and started a family.

The ‘malikijarra Jukurrpa’ (two dogs Dreaming) tells of family, marriage, and belonging. In Warlpiri art, the dogs’ ribcages and nearby waterholes are shown, symbolising both the story and the Yankirrikirlangu landscape.
