Bush Plum Aboriginal Art Painting – Anwekety Dreaming Indigenous Artwork

Dreaming: The conkerberry, known as anwekety or bush plum, was dispersed over ancestral lands by the winds, taking root in the fertile ground of the Utopia homelands. The first anwekety of the Dreaming grew there and became an important food source for the Anmatyerre people. The conkerberry plant is a tangled, spiny shrub (Carissa lanceolata) growing up to 2 metres. After rain, fragrant white flowers bloom, followed by sweet black berries that appear only for a few weeks each year. Women of Kathleen's country collect and dry them, soaking them again before eating. The plant also has medicinal uses, with the orange inner root bark soaked to create washes for skin and eye conditions.
