Raymond Walters Penangke

Raymond Walters Japanangka is a contemporary Aboriginal artist born in Alice Springs in November 1975. He comes from a celebrated lineage of artists, including his grandmothers Emily Kame Kngwarreye and Minnie Pwerle, and aunties Margaret Scobie, Gloria Petyarre, Barbara Weir, and Kathleen Petyarre.

Raymond’s cultural roots span across Central Australia. His grandfather’s country is Ngarleyekwerlang (Yuelumu/Mt Allan), northwest of Alice Springs, and his grandmother’s country is Alhalkerre Atnangkerre (Boundary Bore) in Utopia to the northeast. He belongs to the Anmatyerre and Alyawarre language groups.

Raised between bush life and the Aboriginal town camp of Mt Nancy, Raymond’s upbringing was rich in cultural teachings and connection to Country. His mother was born in a creek bed not far from the camp, further grounding his ties to the land and community.

Raymond’s work blends traditional knowledge with a bold, contemporary style. Using vibrant colours and layered textures, his paintings reflect personal stories, ancestral wisdom, and his deep respect for culture and Country.
